This Week 3-25-19

The game we covered was Saturday’s match between the Quakes and Monterrey.  The writeup is here.

In UPSL action Contra Costa FC continued their winning ways with a 5-1 win over San Leandro.

In NPSL action San Ramon FC kicked off their inaugural match hosting the East Bay FC Stompers at home and the debutant club came out on top with a 1-0 win.

Napa Valley 1839 FC had another friendly against a Mexican reserve side.  Last November their club played Club America’s reserves, and this time on Sunday they played against the Chivas reserves.  The visitors scored on a late goal to beat Napa Valley 1-0.

Some articles of note:

Protagonist Soccer has an article on the East Bay (NPSL)/Oakland Stompers (UPSL) and their thoughts behind the name that was around for only one season in the NASL in 1978 but managed to stick around from then until now.  For that one year the top flight had a major Bay Area rivalry with the established San Jose Earthquakes and one would wonder what would have been had it been allowed to flourish.  The Stompers left for Edmonton to be renamed the Drillers the following year.  Still, check it out.

Anything that comes up on Monday, we’ll update it on this page.

Quakes v Monterrey

In a game that was billed as a friendly, the Quakes fielded a mix of regulars and bench players despite having several key starters missing due to international duty against a team that is in the middle of their Mexican league season.

The game marked the debut of 15 year old Cade Cowell.  He immediately made an impact with his goal in the 61st minute with an assist from fellow homegrown player Tommy Thompson.  Although the match was a friendly, head coach Matias Almeyda fielded a lineup of younger players that included teenagers Cowell and Gilberto Fuentes, Reno loanee Duke LaCroix, and draft pick Siad Haji.  The result was the same loss by a score of 2-1 although the match was merely to test out players who would otherwise be sitting on the bench or on loan to affiliate Reno 1868 FC.  Monterrey accounted for their scoring in the first half with goals by Rogelio Funes Mori in the 6th minute and Maximiliano Meza in the 25th.

NPSL schedule – updated

With Stockton FC pulling out of the conference the schedule has been revised.  The season already got underway last weekend with Napa Valley defeating Academica SC 2-0, and some further changes to the slate have been made.

The Stompers/Napa Valley game that was scheduled for March 16 will now be played June 8 (in which Stockton was to play at Oakland)–the UPSL Stompers will play instead.  Napa instead will have 2 more weeks to resume league play with their opener against El Farolito on March 30.  All teams that were scheduled to play Stockton on the given night will now have a bye.

The schedule can be found at npsl.com – search: Golden Gate Conference.

Note: UPSL Stompers will play against Nevada on March 16 at 7:30pm.
