This Week 1-13-20

Aloha.  In the past week there has been some “hot stove” news regarding the Quakes.  First off, Tom Fox has decided to leave the team for other opportunities.

Also, the Quakes select defender Tanner Beason as their first pick, 12th overall in the first round,  in the 2020 Draft.  Midfielder Jack Skahan (27th overall) and defender Jon Bell (38th) were picked in the second round.  Beason is reported to have a deal with the team while Skahan and Bell will need to be signed.  Those are the only picks as the Quakes decided to pass on the 3rd and 4th rounds.

In regards to local college players in the draft, Beason hails from Stanford, while his teammate midfielder Derek Waldeck was selected in the 3rd round (66th) by FC Dallas. Cal defender Simon Lekressner was picked in the 2nd round (30th) by New England.  Goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley of UC Davis went to the Red Bulls, also in the 2nd round (36th). St Mary’s of Moraga had two players picked with goalkeeper Remi Prieur (2nd round, 47th overall) going to Philadelphia and midfielder Anders Engebretsen (4th round, 79th overall) heading to Dallas.

SF City fared well in the draft, with the aforementioned Beason and Skahan going to the Quakes, Lekressner heading to the Revolution, and Prieur going to the Crew.  Defender Jeremy Kelly of UNC was picked by Montreal in the first round, 9th overall, but was later dealt to Colorado.  The Glens had one overall player, with Lekressner playing one year wth the club.

In other news, Contra Costa reversed their penalty kick loss to JASA in the Wild West Cup with a win over Pajaro Valley of Watsonville, again on penalties.  Congratulations to the Walnut Creek club who will now face Santa Ana Winds FC for the chance to play for the UPSL national title.

And the Oakland Roots sign local product Matt Fondy.  Last year he plyed his trade with SF City and the Olympic Club.
