Bay FC v Washington Spirit

Bay FC v Washington Spirit

Bay FC lose to Washington 3-2 before a sellout crowd of 40,901 at Oracle Park in San Francisco.  While the visitors scored early and with all of their goals happening in the first half, the home team fought back with two unanswered goals but in the end they fell short of a draw. The match was the first women’s club professional match in San Francisco, and the most recent hosted women’s match in 12 years where the USA and New Zealand played at the old Candlestick Park.

Kate Wiesner opened up the goal scoring with her strike into the net in 7 minutes early into the match followed by Croix Bethune in the 39th minute.  Washington was able to net a third goal when Bay FC’s Kelli Hubly tapped the ball into her own net in the early part of stoppage time.  However, the comeback occurred in the latter part of stoppage time with Rachael Kundananji was able to weave her way into the box and put Bay FC on the scoreboard to close the first half.

The aforementioned Hubly got redemption with her comeback goal 9 minutes into the second half cutting the deficit to one. The Bay FC women were able to limit Trinity Rodman off the scoresheet but was unable to secure an equalizer and a result for the second straight year at a baseball venue.  Despite the loss, the crowd was able to witness history and show support for the women’s game in San Francisco.
