Quakes v Real Salt Lake

In a match in which both teams needed a win in order to bolster their MLS Cup playoff fortunes, it was Chris Wondolowski who came in the clutch through his goals in the 16th minute off a missed post shot from Cristian Espinoza and again in the 74th minute off a feed from Shea Salinas, which was his 47th career assist for the Quakes tying him with Ronald Cerritos for the all time lead in that category.  The result was a 2-0 victory for the Quakes over Real Salt Lake, and as of now they are in the driver’s seat to make the playoffs for the first time since 2017. For Wondolowski the brace increases his career tally to 165 goals and that performance earned him Player of the Week honors.

The Quakes will play one more home game against LAFC on Sunday November 1 before heading back to Seattle the following weekend on November 8 in what could be a playoff deciding match for both teams.  Real Salt Lake is in a must win situation with their away swing continuing to LA to play the Galaxy at Carson on November 1 before heading home against Sporting Kansas City on November 8.

This Week 10-26-20

The only matchup from last week was Saturday’s Quakes 2-1 loss to Vancouver.  Due to current travel restrictions from the Covid-19 pandemic the match was played at the Timbers home stadium in Portland.  Carlos Fierro opened up the scoring for the Quakes in the 24th minute but that lead could not be kept thanks to a pair of Whitecaps goals in the second half from Ali Adnan in the 51st minute, and Tosaint Ricketts grabbing the go ahead goal 6 minutes later.

The Quakes currently hold the last playoff spot in eighth place and only one point behind fifth place.  Their final regular season games against Real Salt Lake Wednesday and LAFC Sunday at home, and Seattle on November 8 on the road may hold the key to the team’s playoff fortunes.

This Week 10-19-20

Again, here are the weekly deets. First up, the Quakes continued their road trip and this time to LA for another match against the Galaxy.  This time they end up manhandling the Southern California club 4-0 thanks to a brace by Nick Lima who opened the scoring in the 44th minute and capped the game with his late second half stoppage time tally, and two additional second half goals from Andy Rios in the 52nd minute and Tommy Thompson in the 79th.

The other news, which was missed in last week’s post, happens to be with Jackson Yueill, who has signed a multi-year extension and will remain with the Quakes in the forseeable future.  The deal has been reportedly set for three years, and there is still the chance he may stay long term or get a chance to play overseas.  For now, JY will remain a fixture in the Quakes roster, especially with the team moving from Wondo and into a new direction.

Quakesfan has another off-the-cuff article, and this time it’s a “Moneyball” take on why the kid Cade Cowell should be in the starting lineup over Andy Rios.  The fans can either agree or disagree on whether or not this is the case but the take is very interesting.  Check it out.

The last bit of news is from Sunday where the Quakes and Sounders played to a scoreless draw.  The result was a major improvement from their last meeting in September where the Quakes were on the losing end of a 7-1 loss and reminiscent of their meeting in Orlando in July, again with no goals scored.  Their next meeting on November 8 in Seattle may determine the post season fate of either team.  Next up for the Quakes is a weekend road trip to Portland against the Vancouver Whitecaps, while the Sounders host the Timbers on Thursday October 22.

Finally, our friend Joel Soria gives his take on sfgate on the current state of affairs with the Quakes.  In order to compete, the team needs to spend to meet expectations of the newer teams such as Atlanta United.
