NPSL schedule – updated

With Stockton FC pulling out of the conference the schedule has been revised.  The season already got underway last weekend with Napa Valley defeating Academica SC 2-0, and some further changes to the slate have been made.

The Stompers/Napa Valley game that was scheduled for March 16 will now be played June 8 (in which Stockton was to play at Oakland)–the UPSL Stompers will play instead.  Napa instead will have 2 more weeks to resume league play with their opener against El Farolito on March 30.  All teams that were scheduled to play Stockton on the given night will now have a bye.

The schedule can be found at npsl.com – search: Golden Gate Conference.

Note: UPSL Stompers will play against Nevada on March 16 at 7:30pm.

This Week 2-25-19

We were at the Quakes friendly against the Sounders. The result was a 2-2 draw with Seattle taking the 2-0 lead into halftime, only to give it away thanks to two penalty kick goals by Chris Wondolowski in the 57th and 61 minutes. The next game for both teams will be their league openers on March 2 with the Quakes hosting Montreal and the Sounders at home playing against expansion team FC Cincinnati.

In other action, the Stompers and Sol played a preseason friendly game at the North Bay. The venue was switched from Raimondi Park in Oakland to Casa Grande High School in Petaluma. The Stompers and Sol drew even with a goal each in their warmup to the NPSL season which starts March 16 for both clubs.

NPSL schedule announced.

The 2019 NPSL Golden Gate Conference has been announced. The major omission is the absence of CD Aguiluchos USA, which was a perennial contender in the region. Stockton and San Ramon have been added to the conference, while the Stompers will now return to Raimondi Park in Oakland.

The season kicks off March 9 with Academica SC hosting Napa Valley on the road at the Central Valley. They hit the road again to Oakland to play the Stompers a week later before their home opener March 30 against El Farolito. The second year outfit will host newcomer Stockton FC at Kezar with a noontime start on March 23.

Farolito will split their schedule between Kezar with 2 games and Boxer for the rest. Their Boxer opener will be on April 13 against Academica.

San Ramon will make their debut with a home match against the Stompers on March 23 at 7pm.

The teams will be on break on May 25 before resuming on June 1.

The schedule can be found at npsl.com – search: Golden Gate Conference.

Throwback-Flashback

Every Thursday and/or Friday (or during a break/off-season lull) I’ll be posting items from the vault or anything I never got around to sharing. This blurb is a catchup from January and February before the debut of the site this past March.

East Bay FC Stompers v Japan Select team (Kosmos FC – Kyoto) 1//23/2018.
EBFC 2 – 4 Japan Select (Kosmos FC)

NPSL pre-season friendly to kick off 2018.  My set can be found here:

Of note: The Stompers are celebrating their 40th Anniversary in 2018.  Their only NASL season was played in Oakland.  The Japan Select team consists of college players from Japan and here who were on tour earlier in January, and part of a scouting combine–players trying to make a professional club.
Black and Blue Scrimmage 1/27/2018
Debut for this site.  Just practice and a way to welcome the team back for the upcoming season.  Open to season ticket holders, the soccer version of “Fan Fest”.
I don’t stick around for the player appearances but the event is a way for fans to get pictures and autographs and to talk about the upcoming season.  Just a few fun highlights here:

Quakes v Reno 2/10/2018
Highlights and scenes from the friendly between the MLS team and their USL minor league affiliate.  The Quakes defeated Reno 1868 FC 4-0 in the team’s soft opener (preseason).

Of note: My NPSL sets are on my flickr host, my PDL material are on flickr and Facebook, while my MLS notebook is only on Facebook.

All photos by Nap Badillo/Nap Ba (as the Stompers still mention, so going with both).  Enjoy and there will be more items forthcoming from the vault–be in the stands or on the pitch.

El Farolito v Stompers

In a game that was marked by chippy play, yellow cards, and a red card to captain Zano Mahic of the visiting team East Bay FC Stompers, the new home team El Farolito broke the deadlock with a late goal from Gustavo Ruelas in the 84th minute to give them a 2-1 win.  Faro opened up the scoring with a 55th minute goal from Luis Hernandez (no relation to the Mexican legend), while the Stompers responded with the equalizer from Gerardo Moya in the 72nd minute.

This game marked the return of the former San Francisco team which played many of their games at the venerable stadium before moving to the East Bay for the 2016 season.  The return leg was a rematch of the opening night meeting on March 17 which saw Farolito come back to steal a point on the road over the host Stompers in a 1-1 draw.   As of Saturday night, El Farolito holds first place with 18 points over CD Aguiluchos with 17.

El Farolito stays home to host Sonoma County Sol in another noontime start Saturday May 19.  The Stompers return to Hayward to host newcomer FC Davis on the same day at 7pm.

Update 5/14: Tommy Hodul’s report on the game.

Stompers v Sacramento Gold

Steven Wright of Sacramento opened the tally with a goal in the 44th minute to give the visiting Sacramento Gold a 1-0 lead.  However, that was short lived as the Stompers came from behind thanks to a brace from Zanin Mahic.  His penalty kick goal in the 69th minute drew the game even at 1-1 but his winning strike in the 88th minute sealed the comeback, giving the home team a 2-1 victory.

The win was the second straight for the Stompers and placed them in third position (9 points) in the Golden Gate Conference behind newcomer El Farolito (14 points) and perennial contender Aguiluchos (14 points)–who contested against each other earlier that day.  The Hayward team is currently on a 3 game unbeaten streak. The loss was the second this season for the Gold, who are in last place with 4 points, all of them draws. They are yet to win a match this season.

Next up for the Stompers is a road trip to Turlock to face newcomer Academica SC on Saturday May 5 at 7pm, while the Gold returns home to host Sonoma County Sol on the same day, same start time.  The two teams will meet again on June 23, this time in Sacramento in which either or both teams could be battling for a playoff berth, or for pride.

Stompers v El Farolito

At Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, Gustavo Tavera-Rico scored on the 28th minute with the assist from Ali Radmand to give the Stompers the 1-0 lead in the home opener for the club. However, despite chippy play consumed by 8 yellow cards (3 from the home team, 5 from the visitors), plus a red card issued to Manuel Garcia of El Farolito in the 71st minute–the NPSL debuatants converted off a late penalty kick from Jansen Salton in the second half of stoppage time to draw the game at 1-1 and to steal a point on the road.

Both teams will rebound on the road on March 24. The Stompers next play at another NPSL newcomer FC Davis while El Farolito head up the North Bay at Sonoma County Sol.  Both teams will play again May 12 at Boxer Stadium in San Francisco.  The Stompers will be the visiting team at one of their old home grounds this time, with El Farolito choosing the Balboa Park venue as their home pitch in their NPSL debut season.

Update 3/19/2018: Caution stats added along with the goal scorer from El Farolito.
