Quakes v Bay Cities FC (US Open Cup)

Fresh off a major coaching change for the Quakes and a last minute win for Bay Cities FC in the last round of the tournament both clubs were looking for a momentum shift.  What was “won on paper” turned out to be a reality as the top flight club made the upstart visitors who became familiar with the stadium come crashing down to earth and ending their run after two games with a resounding 5 to 0 win for the Quakes.

The game was no contest thanks to goals from Jack Skahan, Paul Marie, Cade Cowell from the penalty spot, Niko Tsakiris, and Ousseni Bouda.

While the Quakes await their next opponent in the Open Cup they return to MLS play with another home match against Seattle on Saturday April 23 at 7pm.  Bay Cities return to NISA play on the same day and time with another road match to Southern California to face Cal United Strikers.

Update 4/21/22: adding Doug’s summary at Soccer Bay Area.

Bay Cities FC v Monterey Bay FC (US Open Cup)

In what is deemed a major upset, and one since the 1997 run of the San Francisco Seals when they defeated what is now Sporting Kansas City (Wizards) and the second incarnation of the San Jose Earthquakes (Clash) – the upstart Bay Cities FC from Redwood City (NISA) led by founder and coach Anders Perez defeated Monterey Bay Cities FC 2-1.  It was of note that the coach of the losing team was Frank Yallop who was at the home of his former team and will once again return in two weeks on April 23 to have his name etched in the Quakes Wall of Fame.

The select shots from this match is here, and can also be found at the spot below and on the 3pointsport IG.

While our highlight photo is here on Soccer Bay Area.  Doug Zimmerman has a better take on the game and yes, the significance is still hard to take it but still–an impressive victory by Bay Cities–who will play their home opener this Saturday against Valley United from Arizona at Tranmere Field 7pm start.

There is also another slate of games that was just announced, and this marks the eventual return of NISA to this area.  The latest Bay Area club, Bay Cities FC from Redwood City, will be playing in the 2021 Independent Cup consisting of NISA, select UPSL teams, and other amateur/semi-professional clubs. In this tournament they have been placed in the Pacific Region against Cal Victory FC, PDX FC, and Space United FC. These games will continue to serve as a test run before their NISA debut next year.

The schedule for Bay Cities FC is they will open up against Cal Victory FC on Saturday July 10 6pm at Sequoia  (High School) Union Stadium.  Their second match of the tournament will be on the road to Portland, Oregon against PDX FC at Hilken Community Stadium on Saturday July 17 at 6pm.   The latest Bay Area club will return home to Sequoia to host Space United FC of Seattle on Saturday July 24 at 5pm to close out the first round.

More details will be announced at a later date if Bay Cities FC advance past this stage, but we can anticipate them playing against the likes of Chattanooga and Detroit.  If this happens, the plan is to provide coverage on that end.

We will continue to provide soccer coverage in the Bay Area as the region and entire state returns to the fold.  Stay tuned for more summer updates.
