Throwback-Flashback

Every Thursday and/or Friday (or during a break/off-season lull) I’ll be posting items from the vault or anything I never got around to sharing. This blurb is a catchup from January and February before the debut of the site this past March.

East Bay FC Stompers v Japan Select team (Kosmos FC – Kyoto) 1//23/2018.
EBFC 2 – 4 Japan Select (Kosmos FC)

NPSL pre-season friendly to kick off 2018.  My set can be found here:

Of note: The Stompers are celebrating their 40th Anniversary in 2018.  Their only NASL season was played in Oakland.  The Japan Select team consists of college players from Japan and here who were on tour earlier in January, and part of a scouting combine–players trying to make a professional club.
Black and Blue Scrimmage 1/27/2018
Debut for this site.  Just practice and a way to welcome the team back for the upcoming season.  Open to season ticket holders, the soccer version of “Fan Fest”.
I don’t stick around for the player appearances but the event is a way for fans to get pictures and autographs and to talk about the upcoming season.  Just a few fun highlights here:
Quakes v Reno 2/10/2018
Highlights and scenes from the friendly between the MLS team and their USL minor league affiliate.  The Quakes defeated Reno 1868 FC 4-0 in the team’s soft opener (preseason).

Of note: My NPSL sets are on my flickr host, my PDL material are on flickr and Facebook, while my MLS notebook is only on Facebook.

All photos by Nap Badillo/Nap Ba (as the Stompers still mention, so going with both).  Enjoy and there will be more items forthcoming from the vault–be in the stands or on the pitch.

Quakes v DC United

DC United scored 3 unanswered goals in the first half and held on to the lead in a 3-1 win over the Quakes.  Zoltán Stieber opened up the tally with a goal in the 15th minute, followed by goals by Darren Mattocks in the 20th, and Yamil Asad in the 37th.  Luciano Acosta had 2 assists in the game, as did Paul Arriola.  The only Quakes goal was off Danny Hoesen unassisted in the 43rd minute.

Four thoughts from Quakesfan

Both teams will be traveling to Los Angeles to meet their respective opponents next weekend.  The Quakes will meet their longtime rival LA Galaxy at the Stubhub Center in Carson, CA in a Friday night tilt on May 25 at 8pm.  DC United will continue their California swing/extended road trip with a match in the Los Angeles city limits playing LAFC at the new Banc of California Stadium on Saturday May 26 at 7pm.  (Of note: the Quakes series against LAFC will be their next home game on June 9 at 7:15pm, and at Southern California on September 22 at 12:30pm.)

Quakes v Timbers

Diego Valeri scored in the 88th minute off a free kick to give the Timbers a road win over the Quakes 1-0, and to steal the points on the road. The match was filled with pomp and ceremony as the San Jose Ultras unveiled a commemorative choreo while announcer and former player Chris Dangerfield was inducted in the Earthquakes Hall of Fame with his plaque unveiled on top of the Avaya Stadium press box.

Quakesfan has his game post here.

The Quakes will travel on the road to play Minnesota United Saturday May 12 at 11am PDT in a rematch of
their opening night tilt. That match was the first and remains the only win to date this season for the
Quakes. The Timbers will be back at home to host their Cascadia rival Seattle Sounders on Sunday May 13 at
1pm.

Quakes v Dynamo

Magnus Eriksson scored his second consecutive goal in as many weeks in the 26th minute, and the first at home to give the Quakes a first half lead.  However, the visitors scored two goals in the second half from Tomas Martinez in the 48th minute and Mauro Manotas in the 63rd minute that appeared to give them 3 away points.  Jahmir Hyka in his debut came off from the bench to snatch a late goal with 5 minutes left plus stoppage time to secure a needed point for the Quakes.

Quakesfan – detailed report

The Quakes hit the road next weekend on April 21 at Orlando City, which will be their debut in the new venue after playing at Camping World Stadium 2 years ago.  The Dynamo will host Toronto FC on the same day.

Update 4/18: Quakesfan report added – thanks Dan – give them a follow at http://www.quakesfan.com for reports, analysis, and photos.

This week 4-2-18

The San Jose Earthquakes announced today they will host Manchester United Sunday July 22 at Levi’s Stadium up the road in Santa Clara.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2pm that afternoon.  Once again the English club will tour North America as part of their warmup to the 2018-2019 Premiership team.

This will be the second time that the Quakes will play the Red Devils–the last meeting was at Avaya Stadium on July 21, 2015 with the visitors defeating the locals 3-1 before a sellout crowd.  The perennial English contenders are no stranger to Santa Clara having played last year on July 23 against Real Madrid of Spain before a packed house and winning on penalty kicks 2-1.  They also clashed against Spanish/Catalan power Barcelona three years ago on July 25 and winning 3-1.

Quakes Season Pass holders will get this match as Bonus Game B.

We were unable to cover this match but the team has a short summary on their 5-1 win over Norte Dame du Namur.  This match kicked off their 2018 year and their pre-season warmup to their opening match on May 5 on the road at Fresno FC and their U-23 PDL club.

Quakes v NYCFC

Yeferson Quintana made a splash with an early goal in the 3rd minute off a corner kick from Magnus Eriksson.  However, the lead was short lived as New York City FC responded with two second half goals from Anton Tinnerholm in the 49th minute and Maximiliano Moralez in the  60th minute to give the visitors a 2-1 victory before a sellout crowd of 18,000.  The Quakes had a goal called off late in the second half, losing out on a point in the standings.  The home team mounted a fierce comeback only to fall short in the end.

Dan from Quakesfan has his take and so forth on the game.

The Quakes go back on the road against the Philadelphia Union in their only meeting next weekend on April 7 before returning home to face the Houston Dynamo on April 14.  New York City FC is on a break before resuming April 11 hosting Real Salt Lake at Yankee Stadium.

Quakes v Leon

Landon Donovan was greeted with a mix of boos and cheers in his Avaya Stadium debut, but he had the last word in the exhibition with his goal in the 19th minute. That was the only scoring as Club Leon defeated the Quakes 1-0 before a crowd of 14,532.

The Quakes international record is now 11-10-8. The futility for them continues with a 1-7-3 record against the teams from south of the border. Next up for the Quakes will be New York City FC on March 31 in their bi-annual appearance at Avaya Stadium. There is an early 4:45pm start to accomodate the ESPN networks, who will cover this match live. Leon will continue their road tour against Tigres UNAL on the same day.

Quakes v Minnesota

Danny Hoesen scored a brace while Vako added a goal as the Quakes took a 3-0 lead. Minnesota came back with 2 goals from Kevin Molino but the home team held on for a 3-2 victory to kick off the 2018 season.  The score was similar to the last game of the 2017 season in which the Quakes scored the game winner at the end of stoppage time.
