Stompers v JASA Redwood City

In UPSL play the Stompers and JASA played to a 1-1 draw at Raimondi Park.  JASA got off to the early lead with an early goal at the 30th minute, only to be drawn even with a goal by Benji Joya in the 32nd minute.  His resume includes stops at Santos Laguna and Necaxa in Mexico, and Sporting Kansas City and Chicago in MLS.  He also has played for the USA for the U20s  in 2013 with the likes of DeAndre Yedlin, Luis Gil. Jose Villarreal, Kellyn Acosta, Wil Trapp, and Zach Steffen.

With the draw the Stompers are yet to win a match but have only 1 loss and 2 draws while placing fourth out of five teams in the Western Conference Wild West South Division.  JASA Redwood City has a hold on first place in the division with an undefeated record of 2 wins, no losses, and 2 draws.

The Stompers will continue US Open Cup play against Real San Jose at Raimondi Park on Saturday October 20 at 7 and resume UPSL league play hosting San Leandro United the week after on October 27 7:30pm.  JASA also will be continuing their US Open Cup run hosting Napa Sporting SC at Sequoia High School but resume league play hosting San Leandro United at Red Morton Community Park Bechet Field on Sunday October 21 at 5pm.

Quakes v Cruz Azul

Before a sellout crowd of 18,000 the Quakes and Cruz Azul played to a scoreless draw.  The match was eventful in the sense that the game was played at a mini-Azteca and was the second Liga MX team that the Quakes hosted this season, having played Leon in March.

The game also marked the return of Rafa Baca, who spent 3 seasons with the Quakes from 2011 to 2013.  His return to the Quakes as a second half sub was met with respectable cheers.

The Quakes international record is now 11-10-10 having drawn both Manchester United and Cruz Azul this year.  The team has not been successful playing Liga MX/Primera Division teams in their history, but the draw was their fourth, and now have improved to 1-7-4. Next up for the Quakes will be their final home game at Avaya Stadium on October 21 against the Colorado Rapids at 1:45pm.  Cruz Azul will play on the road against Querétaro on Saturday October 20 at 3pm.

Olympic Club v Mezcala (SFSFL Championship Game)

We have been busy this weekend with both the Quakes v Red Bulls game Saturday and the SFSFL Championship Game between Mezcala and Olympic Club at Boxer Stadum.  Olympic Club ended up being the dominant team with a 5-2 victory over Mezcala to win the trophy.  Despite the Sunday being dominated by other headlines, a respectable crowd of 300 were in attendance for this title match.

The San Francisco Soccer Football League (SFSFL) is one of the oldest soccer leagues in the USA, having their start in 1902.  To put this in perspective, the US Open Cup didn’t start until 1914, the National Football League (American football) until 1920, and the baseball championship which was later to called the “World” Series didn’t get contested until the following year in 1903, with a boycott happening that year after by a team called the New York Giants, and not resuming until 1905 with that team winning it all.

We were there with a few of the SF City people and Tommy from the Roots so here is the take–since a pair, Dylan Murphy and Danny Kirkland, were representing Olympic Club.

We have a few select shots here in the gallery, plus the set on the Flickr host/cloud:

Our plan is to cover select games around the UPSL and other lower leagues for the rest of the calendar year.  We’ve covered the Oakland Roots, Oakland Stompers, the SFSFL title match, and we like to venture down to Redwood City to check out JASA so stay tuned for more matches between now and November.  The next matches for 3pointsport will be the remaining Quakes matches at Avaya, both a friendly against Cruz Azul and the final league match against Colorado.  We love to know what you think so we can take things to the next level next season.

Quakes v Red Bulls

The Quakes season of futility continued with a loss against Eastern Conference contender New York Red Bulls 3-1 in their bi-annual match at Avaya Stadium.  Alex Myul (29th minute), Bradley Wright-Phillips (32nd minute), and Aaron Long (50th minute) accounted for the Red Bulls scoring and they held on to the lead for the remainder of the match.  The one Quakes consolation was a late goal from Chris Wondolowski (83rd minute).  His tally put him at 144 goals which puts him closer to tying the record set by Landon Donovan at 145.

The Quakes will finish out their home league schedule on Sunday October 21 against the Colorado Rapids 2pm kick off.  However, during the international window they will host a match against Liga MX club Cruz Azul on Saturday October 13 at 5:15 pm.  The Red Bulls are off next weekend for the international matches, but will hit the road with a trip along Interstate 95 to play against the Philadelphia Union on October 21.

Our buddies at the Beautiful Blog were in the house.  The report from Doug Z is at the site – yes, he is there when the (team formerly known as the) Metros visits the Bay Area.  If the schedule only allowed for a home and home series instead a bi-annual visit–for 2019 the teams will play at Red Bull Arena.

Also, Jimmy Conrad was introduced as the SF Glens Technical Director/Associate Head Coach.  It looks like that he will be coaching not only the PDL (USL: League Two) outfit as an assistant but also will be overseeing the various teams under the team’s umbrella ranging from futsal to the youth groups.  Conrad’s playing resume includes stints with the San Jose Earthquakes/Clash, Kansas City Wizards (Sporting Kansas City), and in college with UCLA.  He also played in the 2006 World Cup for the USA.

Quakes v Atlanta United

The Quakes played a very spirited game against top ranked Atlanta United FC, only to once again let the lead slip away with a 4-3 loss.  Nick Lima and Danny Hoesen accounted for the first half scoring, while Vako added one more in the second half.  Chris Wondolowski, as a second half sub for Hoesen, had his goal disallowed only to award the penalty kick to Atlanta for a previously called handball by way of video assisted replay.  Hector Villalba opened the scoring for the visitors with his stoppage time goal in the first half.  Josef Martinez later scored on the penalty kick in the 70th minute, followed by a strike from Miguel Almiron 3 minutes later.  Martinez later sealed the win with his late stoppage time goal.

Quakes v Sporting Kansas City

The Quakes continued their season of futility with a 5-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City.  Danny Hoesen accounted for the only scoring with his goal in the 80th minute with the assist from Luis Felipe.  Felipe Gutierrez opened up the scoring for KC in the 7th minute and they held on to the lead for the rest of the match.  Gerso Fernandes added 2 goals, while former Quakes defender Ike Opara had one more late in the first half.  Krisztian Nemeth also contributed to the KC tally in the second half.  Chris Wondolowski was held scoreless in his quest to break the MLS all-time goal scoring record.  The win by Sporting KC puts them in first place with 51 points, one ahead of FC Dallas with 50.

Throwback-Flashback: Chelsea FC

Taking things back to 2007 when Chelsea FC came to the Bay Area.  Not the best view, and not the best camera at that time but the original plan was to see them in Los Angeles but when this game was announced the game at Stanford Stadium against Club America was the better sell.  Some of the top names were part of the tour including John Terry, Didier Drogba, Peter Cech, and Frank Lampard.  Since the Quakes were not playing that year a soccer fix was very hard to come by except for the lower division teams at that time so something to check out.  On a personal note, this friendly won out over the baseball All-Star Game.

If there’s a team that would be worth the revisit Chelsea would be it.
