Throwback-Flashback: Swansea City

It has been a while since a Throwback-Flashback has been posted.  So, I’m finally catching up on the archives.  Surprisingly enough with the free time not one post, but here it is.

This edition is on Swansea City of Wales.  The highlights are from their 2012 friendly against San Jose in which both teams played to a 2-2 draw. As one of two Welsh teams (the other being Cardiff City) to have played in the Premiership they have had recent success before being relegated back to the League Championship (Tier 2) in 2018.  The club had a recent attempt at returning to the top flight with a 6th place finish in the 2019-2020 season but were eliminated in the first round playoff by Brentford. As of this post, the team is looking towards another attempt at a Premiership spot.

Throwback-Flashback: West Bromwich Albion

The latest edition of the Throwback-Flashback series goes back to 2011 when West Bromwich Albion made their visit to Buck Shaw Stadium to play the Quakes.

Their tour was from their tenure at the English Premiership, which was from the 2010-2011 season to 2017-2018.  At this time they play in the second tier League Championship and are attempting to get promoted back to the top tier.

The most iconic highlight was goalkeeper David Bingham scoring from the box early in the game in one of the rarest feats in soccer.

It has been several months since the last installment but we’ll be adding more in the future, including the matches against Swansea City and Norwich City.  In a twist, those teams and West Brom had been relegated to the second tier League Championship in England, with only Norwich returning back to the Premiership.   It looks like that they could go back down while Brom earning back promotion.  It is the one reason why I endorse in theory promotion and relegation, but that discussion is for another day given there are business, financial, and legal logistics that need to be worked on to prevent teams from folding or contracting.

In any case, there will be more of the throwback series to come in the future.  In the meantime enjoy the coverage of Bay Area soccer from the lower leagues of the UPSL and NPSL, the USL League Two clubs, and MLS.  The future plan is to include NISA be on the stands or on the field.

Throwback-Flashback: SF City Volume 2

This edition showcases San Francisco City FC.  However, taking this in a bit different course and concentrating on the Norcal Premiership years of 2015 before they became a PDL (now League Two) club the following year.

The selection was too big that we had to split this into two parts. This time we are focusing on the best of the fall schedule that led to the 2016 NorCal Premier title–which was the last hurrah before moving up to what was called the PDL.

Throwback-Flashback: AC Milan

This edition showcasing the 2016 game with AC Milan when they played against Liverpool in the International Champions Cup.  The original plan was to post this in late July but due to all the circumstances leading to the August match we decided to delay writing this blurb.  Instead, it is just the one game from two years ago from the stint with FootySF.  Enjoy!

Throwback-Flashback: Chelsea FC

Taking things back to 2007 when Chelsea FC came to the Bay Area.  Not the best view, and not the best camera at that time but the original plan was to see them in Los Angeles but when this game was announced the game at Stanford Stadium against Club America was the better sell.  Some of the top names were part of the tour including John Terry, Didier Drogba, Peter Cech, and Frank Lampard.  Since the Quakes were not playing that year a soccer fix was very hard to come by except for the lower division teams at that time so something to check out.  On a personal note, this friendly won out over the baseball All-Star Game.

Chelsea FC.

If there’s a team that would be worth the revisit Chelsea would be it.

Throwback-Flashback: USA Women

Originally this was on the docket for the Throwback-Flashback series but because we could only be in the stands for the recent match we considered putting this article on the backburner until next year. However, because of Instagram interest we decided to post the XI from the vault.  From Candlestick Park 30 some odd rows up in 2013 and Avaya Stadium on the field in 2016.

Of note: 2016  Quakesfan/FootySF and 2013 with the American Outlaws in the stands.
