Quakes v Cruz Azul

Thanks to 2 second half goals from Paul Marie in the 57th minute and Cristian Espinoza in the 72nd, the Quakes defeated Cruz Azul in their second meeting since October 2018 when they played to a scoreless draw.

Our game set is here–both including the original posts and the Instagram photos.  The shots were all taken from the upper rows of PayPal Park.

Both teams resume league play on Saturday October 16 with the Quakes on the road to play LAFC 12:30pm kick off, while Cruz Azul will resume Liga MX play hosting Tigres 7pm start.

Roots v Republic

In a long awaited Northern California rivalry matchup at Laney College, the first year Roots finally hosted a match against USL originals Republic.  The original game from June 19 was postponed and eventually moved to Las Positas College on August 11 but the second match seemed like a debut game and it did not disappoint.

Quincy Amarikwa kicked off the scoring with his goal in the 10th minute but Dariusz Formella drew the game even 21 minutes later to level the teams at a goal each.

The Roots scored the game winner thanks to a goal from Emrah Klimenta in the 63rd minute.  With Oakland’s victory they have a series tiebreaker with one win and three draws.

The Roots will hit the road in a short turnaround at Phoenix on Saturday October 9 at 7:30 pm, while Sacramento continues their road schedule to San Diego on the same night/time.

Roots v Lights

The Roots end up drawing at the last minute 2 to 2 thanks to a late Lights goal from CC Uche at the 89th minute.  The Lights got off to an early lead with a Danny Trejo goal in the 5th minute.   The Roots later drew even thanks to a 24th minute goal from Quincy Amarikwa.  The second tally was added thanks to the Lights Tony Leone directing a own goal four minutes later giving the home town the lead.  Unfortunately it was not meant to be with the last place Lights tying the game and stealing a point on the road.

Oakland Roots lose ground with tie vs Vegas

The Roots host Sacramento in an important midweek game with both teams vying for the postseason Wednesday October 6 7pm kickoff, while the Lights host LA Galaxy II Friday October 8 7pm start.

Quakes v Sounders

The Quakes hosted the Sounders in a weeknight matchup with both teams aspiring to play in the postseason tournament.  However, it was the visitors that ended up dominating the game with the Sounders winning 3-0.  The Quakes were doomed from the start thanks to an early goal from Raul Ruidiaz in the 25th minute.  His second tally from the penalty spot 17 minutes later to close the first half, plus an insurance goal from Cristian Roldan in the 49th minute sealed the win for Seattle.  Only an own goal from Shane O’Neil gave the Quakes their only tally of the match.

The select photos are forthcoming.

The Quakes sweep the home series vs LAFC thanks to their 2-0 win.  Early half goals from Benji Kikanovic in the 3rd minute to kick off the first half and Chofis in the 47th minute to start the second sealed the victory for the home team, who are now 5-4-2 in the past 11 games.

The photo highlights are forthcoming.

This Week 9-20-21

Our coverage was on Wednesday at San Jose for the Quakes and Saturday at Oakland for the Roots.

Both teams had two games in a week with the Quakes hosting Real Salt Lake and then returning to Texas to face Austin.  As for the Roots they played two “home” games, one against Tacoma at their training grounds at Las Positas College in Livermore and at their regular home stadium at Laney against the Galaxy 2 team.  Our friends at Soccer Bay Area has the deets on the games.

One more from our other buddy Dan at Quakesfan.  The US National Team resumes play next month and despite the win against Honduras on the road (note: his summary was posted after two games being played against El Salvador and Canada where the US drew against both opponents) the remaining games will be very challenging especially with 14 games (now 11 to go) against the past 10 matches to get into the World Cup tournament.  It’s time to panic with three games to be played in October and the same number again in November, two more at the end of January, before concluding in March with three remaining games to round out qualifying. No game will be easy especially with eight teams trying to get three or maybe four spots for 2022.

Sometimes You Need to Panic (USMNT reflections)

To close out, congratulations to Chofis for being named Player of the Week for his performance against Salt Lake scoring a hat trick in a losing effort, and Austin for his brace to earn a much needed win. The honor also earned him a spot in the Best XI for the week

The Roots have another quick turnaround, this time against San Diego Loyal in their second meet this month.  That match will take place at Livermore (Las Positas College) on  Wednesday September 22 at 7pm. Los Dos will continue their road trip, this time at Sacramento on Sunday September 26 2pm kick off.

Quakes v Real Salt Lake

The Quakes hosted another midweek match, this time against Real Salt Lake, but the effort was all for naught thanks to a 4-3 loss.  Chofis was clearly the player of the match thanks to his hat trick.  His goal in the 26th minute gave the Quakes the lead but the visitors evened the score thanks to a Rubio Rubin tally before the end of the first half.

The second half had the match with both teams exchanging the lead with Salt Lake adding with a goal from Alfred Rusnak in the 49th minute. Another Chofis strike one minute later and the third to complete his trick fifteen minutes after gave the Quakes a 3-2 lead.  The possible three point win and one point draw were blown thanks to goals from Justin Meram (71st minute) Rubin Rubio (81st minute) and giving Salt Lake the win.

Our select photos from the match:

San Jose has a quick turnaround with a return trip to Texas, this time again Austin this Satuday September 18 5pm kickoff, while Salt Lake returns home to host Seattle on the same day 6:30 PDT start.
