This Week 4-6-20

There are no updates to the soccer schedule.  It’s looking like the MLS season could resume in May but the situation is ever changing.

This weekend was supposed to be a rematch of the 25th Anniversary of the first MLS match between the Clash (as the Earthquakes were called from 1996 to 1999) and DC United.

The team site has a retrospective of the events leading to the return of top flight professional soccer after the demise of the first NASL (1968-1984).  Jake Pisani (also the one person responsible for this outlet having a chance to cover the game from the pitch) has culled quotes from the key players both from the field and behind the scenes on their thoughts of that day.  We will meet again!  Also for you 90s video game junkies a clip of the very first goal in MLS history.

A post from last week on NBC Sports regarding the USL League Two season.  The games are contingent on the college players availability.  The early matches are filled with outside players before the collegiate contingent joins the club.

This Week 3-30-20

No news right now, except the NPSL has cancelled their 2020 season last week, and the other lower leagues may not be far behind.  When the games resume, most likely the top leagues and the local amateur schedule will continue.

If and when it happens, some analysis from thecup.us on who should be playing if the US Open Cup happens this year.

A modest proposal: How to salvage 2020 US Open Cup amid coronovirus pandemic

In the meantime, posting select items from the Rugby Sevens World Cup held at AT&T (now Oracle) Park on July 2018 with the other part coming next Monday.  We previously posted some articles back then and adding some select shots which can be found on the photo cloud and on Instagram.  Enjoy and be safe.

In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidance to postpone events involving more than 50 people over the next eight weeks, Major League Soccer has extended the postponement of its matches during this period of time. MLS remains focused on playing the entire 2020 season and is evaluating all options, including pushing back the end of the season and playing MLS Cup in December, as the league did prior to the 2019 season. The league is also identifying other available dates. Throughout this process, MLS will continue to prioritize the safety of our fans, players, employees and partners and to coordinate with federal and local public health authorities as well as other sporting organizations.

Of note, the USL Championship and USL League One seasons have been paused until May 10.

Update 3/20: NISA also has extended their hiatus to May 10.

Update 3/20: USL League Two, which includes SF City, SF Glens, and Santa Cruz Breakers, have delayed their start until after May 10.

With no news to report, the Monday “This Week” column for March will present a random soccer theme or something outside of the usual sphere.   Stay tuned on March 16 and 23 for something “completely” different.  All the support has been and is appreciated throughout.

The matches will still be played at 3 pm, and a live stream will be available at MyCujoo.tv.

Oakland Roots and Project 51O officials will continue to monitor the situation. The safety of our fans, as well as players and staff on both teams, is paramount.
