This Week 8-9-21

Our coverage was one game Saturday and a triple header Sunday–at San Francisco, San Jose, and Redwood City for the nightcap.

We were also in Oakland for the Roots return to Laney against Phoenix.

First up, Cristian Espinoza and Nathan were named to the MLS Team of the Week.

The Roots had two games this past week at home against Phoenix and on the road at Tacoma.  Their losing woes continue and Doug and Mike at Soccer Bay Area have the deets on both.

Right now, we’re trying to catch up on our original reports but please check out our photo highlights on Instagram at @3pointsport – we’ll be posting our summer highlights in the coming weeks.  We’re also on Facebook at @3pointsport.

Quakes v LAFC

In a renewed battle between old (Chivas USA) new rivals, LAFC marked another visit to San Jose with their star lineup of Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi.  This time however, the home team got the better hand thanks to two goals from Nathan in the 11th minute and Chofis in the 28th–Cristian Espinoza assisted on both tallies.  Jackson Yueill accounted for the Quakes scoring in the stats sheet but for the other team with his own goal in the 39th minute.  This was all the scoring as the Quakes held on for a 2-1 win.  Goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski kept the opposition off the board with his 6 saves.  Jeremy Ebobisse made his team debut as a first half substitute in the 36th minute.

The Quakes extend their unbeaten streak to 7 with 2 wins and 5 draws as their winning streak against LAFC to three victories.

The Quakes continue their home schedule this Friday against Vancouver start time 7:30pm while LAFC continue their road trip with a match against Atlanta United Sunday August 15 1pm PST kickoff.

Oakland Roots v Phoenix Rising

After several false starts from the opening game being postponed due to unsafe field conditions, playing a closed door game and a few more away from home at Livermore, and a Covid outbreak among the team the Roots finally was able to play at their home field in Oakland.  Despite the return match and official USL Championship home debut finally being played the team had to offer goodwill gestures such as dollar craft beer, soda, and hot dogs.

While the match was competitive and offered the over 3000 people in attendance an entertaining game it was not enough as Phoenix Rising handed the Oakland Roots a 1-0 defeat. Aodhan Quinn’s 64th minute goal accounted for the only scoring of the match.

Back in Oakland, Roots fight but come up short against Phoenix Rising, 1-0

The Roots head on the road to take on the Tacoma Defiance Sunday August 8 1:30 pm kickoff,  Phoenix resume their road trip this time in a derby match at Las Vegas Lights this Saturday August 7 7:30 pm start.

This Week 8-2-21

OK only one game this weekend and it was at Beach Chalet checking out SF City against the Glens reserves in SFSFL local league play.

The Quakes pull the upset with a 1-0 win over Seattle on the road and get some very valuable points, while the Roots played against Orange County at their temporary venue in Livermore, Las Positas College.  Doug’s writeups on those matches are up at his new site but we’ve shared it along with the other articles in this blurb.

Yes–our friend Quakesfan is back with some musings on the season up to now.  Alright–a ton of fans will most likely get riled up on his latest takes but regardless Dan will have some very difficult views to report.  To grow the game in the Bay Area, we value journalism that if the big outlets won’t do it then the small locals well.  Here, we may or may not say if we agree or disagree but we’ll respect that the story is being told and he will get a platform here.  Because of that, Dan and Doug will get shared on this spot. Check it out!

Midseason Musings

Also, as some noticed The Beautiful Blog was deactivated from sfgate.com so now the stories will be posted at a new site http://www.soccerbayarea.com and all the current and past material will be there.  Here, we’re only posting our original takes while sharing the latest from the Bay Area but Doug, Mike K, and Mike A do a much better job at reporting so we’ll yield.

We could not make it to the NPSL playoff game with Farolito but Doug provides the shots from the game while Mike K reports from Boxer Stadium where the team was finally able to host a game since the return of play.

Quakes v Dynamo

For the first time in a month the Quakes returned home to take on the Houston Dynamo in their rematch of their opening day gane.  The result this time was different in which the teams played to a 1-1 draw.

Matias Vera opened up the scoring late in the first half in the 40th minute but the Quakes were able to tie before the close when Cristian Espinoza directed a kick to Tanner Beason which was directed to Zarek Valentin–allowing the ball to slip for an own goal.  The Quakes have a 4 game unbeaten streak dating from their draws with Minnesota, Colorado, Kansas City, and now Houston.

The Quakes now head to the road to play Seattle on July 31 in a Saturday matinee–kick off at 2pm.  The Dynamo return home to host Real Salt Lake on the same day 5:30 pm PT start.

This Week 7-26-21

Our coverage this past weekend was in San Jose for the Quakes and Dynamo and San Francisco for another City matchup.

The Roots took on the LA Galaxy II club Sunday where they lost 3-0. They return home this weekend to face Orange County at Los Positas College in Livermore.  The team will finally make their home debut against Phoenix Rising next Wednesday August 4 7pm kickoff.

Finally Bay Cities closed off their NISA Independent Cup slate against Space United (Seattle, Washington area) in which they drew at 2 goals each.  The team now prepares for their official 2022 NISA league debut.

This Week 7-19-21

Only one game was covered this weekend–this time back to Crocker Amazon in San Francisco for City vs Berenice in local play. The photo album including the items from the gram is here.

Some very unfortunate news from the Oakland Roots where a few of their players have tested positive for Covid-19.  Their matches against Phoenix last Wednesday and Tacoma this past weekend at Las Positas College in Livermore were postponed and have been rescheduled for Wednesday August 25 and September 15 respectively at the same venue. Doug Zimmerman has his take on this news.

And yes, the Quakes played to a 1-1 draw at Commerce City in the Denver area against the Colorado Rapids.  Chofis Lopez scored in the 11th minute to give the Quakes the lead only to have the Rapids even the game with a goal from Cole Bassett in the 53rd minute. They return home next weekend to face Houston and that will be the next 3pointsport match along with anything SF City for the rest of the summer.  There will be another midweek match for the Quakes with a trip to Kansas City this Wednesday at 5:30pm.

This Week 7-12-21

Our coverage this past week was at Redwood City for the Bay Cities match in the NISA Independent Cup and another rec league match with the SF City B  team.  The highlights can be found at the 3pointsport Instagram feed.

Also, Doug at the Beautiful Blog has his take on the Roots match against Las Vegas at Las Positas College in Livermore.  The team will continue to play in the Livermore Valley with matches Wednesday against Phoenix and Saturday versus Tacoma.
