This week 11-5-18

We decided to take a break from coverage this weekend.  However, two UPSL matches took place last weekend between the Oakland Stompers and Real San Jose at the PAL Stadium.  In a match that was reminiscent of the old Stompers vs Quakes meetings, even for only one season, and with second place on the line the East Bay club secured an important road win over Real San Jose 6-1 thanks to 2 goals from P.J. Garcia. The blowout win was their second straight game with 6 goals and moved them in a tie for the remaining post-season spot, with 8 points.

JASA Redwood City played on the road at San Ramon Dynamos with the away team coming up on top 2-1 and the winner of that match is now in the driver’s seat with the top spot in the division with 15 points and a playoff berth secured.  The top two finishers will advance to the Western Conference Playoffs.

San Ramon heads to Oakland to play the Stompers on November 10 while San Leandro hosts Real San Jose on the same night.  JASA has one more game against the Stompers, which was scheduled to be on November 17 but with both teams partaking in the Third Round of US Open Cup Qualifying that game will be rescheduled, with the Stompers at home hosting Academica SC, while JASA heading up to Portland to play IPS/Marathon Taverna.  The new date is yet to be announced and could have playoff implications for the second spot.

There may be few games ongoing right now, but we’re not taking the day off and if we find anything Bay Area soccer related we’ll post it.  Enjoy the week.

In other news…

Once again, this is next week November 14 6:30pm at the Roxie Theater.

Sports In The City – For Economy or Community?

From October 20.  I took the shot so I’m MIA, and I’m not into the spotlight–just want to create fun and great stuff.  However, only a few words so it’s about serving the community.  Thank you San Francisco City.  And a shoutout to Standard Deviant Brewery!

Sports In The City – For Economy or Community?

Wednesday November 14 6:30pm

Roxie Theater 3117 16th Street San Francisco

Professional athletic sports dominate the attention of City Hall and mass media, but often it’s the grass-roots sports programs that provide historically marginalized youth a connection to each other, the larger athletic community and the city as a whole. The “White Elephants” film questions the impact of a waterfront stadium project in Cape Town, South Africa, as the “Futbolistas 4 Life” and the “City Surf Project” films bring Bay Area empowerment stories to life. Join us at this special screening event and panel discussion with speakers who represent many sides of this issue, including sports activist and educator Dania Cabello, who is featured in “Futbolistas 4 Life”.

Co-Presenters: Women’s Sports Film Festival, Oakland Street Stylers

Moderator: Theo Ellington, Former Director of Public Affairs, Warriors

This week 10-29-18

We were at 3 games this weekend all over the San Francisco Bay Area. First up Saturday morning we covered the women’s match at Beach Chalet  between the San Francisco Nighthawks against the Olympic Club women’s team, which is hoping to match the success of their men’s team.  The second game instead of partaking in revelry with the Halloween crew we checked out the USPL I-880 derby at Raimondi Park between the Stompers and San Leandro.  To cap off the slate with a hat trick we returned to Redwood City to check out JASA and Real San Jose.

Also, the San Jose Earthquakes finished out the 2018 season with their game in the Pacific Northwest against the Seattle Sounders.  Unfortunately they did not finish the season on a winning note as they lost 2-1 to the Sounders.

In other news, the Oakland Roots have unveiled their crest.  At a later date they will announce which league they will partake in, as they aspire to bring pro soccer in Oakland.

Bay Area Soccer: Oakland Roots unveil crest, Quakes’ Wondo comes up goal short, Stompers advance in US Open Cup

The MLS season here may be over but like last year, we will be continuing to cover local soccer until November with the lower leagues.  We will not be resting between now and the start of the 2019 season since we will be posting hot stove material and possibly material from the vault. Any breaking news we will post here on the site.

JASA Redwood City v Real San Jose

JASA Redwood increased their lead in the Wild West South with their win and remain unbeaten (4 wins, 0 losses, 3 draws – 15 points) and 7 ahead of second place Real San Jose (2 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws – 8 points).   JASA head to the road next weekend on November 3 when they play San Ramon Dynamos, while Real San Jose hosts the Oakland Stompers on the same day at the PAL Stadium.

Stompers v San Leandro United FC

In a blowout game that was dominated by physical play, the Oakland Stompers put their mark with a 6-0 win over San Leandro United FC.  The goals were from Zahnin Mahic off a penalty kick, two from Burlingame Dragons alum Khaled Arma–all in the first half, with another three in the second half from Michael Molinari, Fire/Sporting KC/USA U23 alum Benji Joya, and Gustavo Tavera-Rico to cap off the barrage.

The win was the first for the Stompers who still have the fourth spot (5 points) in the Wild West South Division with 1 win, 2 losses, and 1 draw while San Leandro still holds third place (6) points with 1 win, 2 losses, and 3 draws.  JASA and Real San Jose still hold the top and second spots respectively pending other results.

Both teams will face off against Real San Jose in their next match.  The Stompers head down the road to play at the PAL Stadium next Saturday November 3, while San Leandro will wait two weeks to resume play and will host the South Bay club on November 10 at Burrell Field.  Up the road at the same time at Raimondi Park the Stompers will host San Ramon Dynamos.

Of note: due to the Stompers and JASA Redwood City playing in the third round of the US Open Cup the weekend of November 17, their league match will be rescheduled at a date to be announced.  That game could come down to post-season rank.  Stay tuned to the site for the new date and time.

Nighthawks v Olympic Club

3pointsport.com was there along with the SF City Northsiders to check out the San Francisco Nighthawks play against the Olympic Club women’s team at the Beach Chalet on Saturday.  In past years City and the Nighthawks have hosted double headers so the arrangement has stuck in place.  (Disclaimer: the writer is a member of the Northsiders).

The game was just as competitive as the top flight NWSL with players in for the love of the sport and possibly the hope of getting a chance to play in the big leagues.  In the end the Nighthawks emerged as the winner defeating Olympic Club 3-2 and retaining their hold on the top spot in the Golden Gate Women’s Soccer League, while the Olympic Club remain in second place.
