Quakes v Real Salt Lake

In a match in which both teams needed a win in order to bolster their MLS Cup playoff fortunes, it was Chris Wondolowski who came in the clutch through his goals in the 16th minute off a missed post shot from Cristian Espinoza and again in the 74th minute off a feed from Shea Salinas, which was his 47th career assist for the Quakes tying him with Ronald Cerritos for the all time lead in that category.  The result was a 2-0 victory for the Quakes over Real Salt Lake, and as of now they are in the driver’s seat to make the playoffs for the first time since 2017. For Wondolowski the brace increases his career tally to 165 goals and that performance earned him Player of the Week honors.

The Quakes will play one more home game against LAFC on Sunday November 1 before heading back to Seattle the following weekend on November 8 in what could be a playoff deciding match for both teams.  Real Salt Lake is in a must win situation with their away swing continuing to LA to play the Galaxy at Carson on November 1 before heading home against Sporting Kansas City on November 8.

Quakes v Minnesota

The Quakes lose to the Loons 5-2.  The wet weather and the recent health news on coronavirus (COVID-19) were enough to reduce the attendance despite the recent concerns but it was a former teammate that did the team in.

The Quakes had to play catchup from the start due to a goal in the 13th minute by former player Ike Opara but thanks to Video Assisted Replay (VAR) San Jose was awarded a penalty kick in which Magnus Eriksson was able to convert 6 minutes later.  However, the Loons were able to pull away with the lead and the win thanks to goals from Jan Luis Robin, and another from Opara.  Vako’s tally in the 53rd was the only consolation goal.

Minnesota will next host NYCFC in their home opener on Sunday March 15 at 4pm, while the Quakes will hit the road for the first time when Philadelphia kicks off their home schedule on Saturday March 14 at 4:30pm.

Quakes v Toronto FC

San Jose kicked off their 2020 season against the defending Eastern Conference champions Toronto FC.  The Canadian club got off to a lead thanks to a penalty kick goal from Alejandro Pozuelo in the 40th minute from the penalty spot, and another goal early in the second half from Richie Laryea.  The Quakes mounted a second half comeback thanks to a goal from Andy Rios in the 53rd minute.

The home team was destined for another loss when Oswaldo Alanis scored off a free kick in the closing minutes of stoppage time to steal a point from Toronto FC.

For this year the key announcement has been the addition of Nashville and Inter Miami to the league.  The Quakes will play Miami on the road on Saturday April 18, while the home and home against Nashville will be June 20 at home and July 25 on the road.

There are three afternoon matches at home with Toronto, DC United, and Atlanta getting early starts.

Only two mid-week games not counting friendlies or Open Cup games, and they commence early in the season with Vancouver on April 29 and Seattle on May 13.

The Quakes will play FC Cincinnati on the road April 26.

One Sunday home game against Houston on August 9, along with the October 4 finale against Colorado–in which all the teams will be playing at the same time.

The 4th of July falls on a Saturday this year so the Quakes will play at Dallas for a  fireworks showdown.

Due to the addition of Nashville and Miami and the 34 game schedule remaining unchanged the Quakes will miss out playing against 3 eastern teams.  New York Red Bulls (last season on the road), Columbus (home), and Orlando City (home) are skipped from the 2020 rotation.  With the addition of Austin and Charlotte in 2021, and Sacramento and St. Louis the year after matches against the eastern clubs will become rare with the focus on play within the western teams.

Rivalry games again:

May kicks off with LAFC coming to town May 9 with the return leg on the road on September 27.

Seattle comes to town for a mid-week match as noted on May 13, and the return leg falls again in the middle of the week on September 16.

The LA Galaxy gets a quick series with the first game on the road June 13 and the traditional return to Stanford on June 27.

Portland will play the Quakes late in the season with the first match on the road July 18, and the return leg at home on September 12.

The NISA Spring Showcase, NPSL, and USL League Two schedule will be announced at a later date.  The US Open Cup matches with the San Jose Earthquakes and various friendlies will be announced in the coming months.  Follow 3pointsport.com for the latest San Francisco Bay Area soccer news.

Update 12/19: Sunday games and July 4 match added.

Update 2/27:  The Quakes game at LAFC has been moved from Saturday September 26 to Sunday September 27.  The start time remains unchanged.

Quakes v Orlando City

Magnus Eriksson’s early goal in the 3rd minute and Chris Wondolowski’s goals in the 20th and 33rd minutes were enough to give the Quakes a 3-0 win over Orlando City SC.

The Quakes will take next weekend off before resuming play on the road with a midweek match at Salt Lake on Wednesday September 11 at 6:30 PT, while Orland City returns home to host LAFC on Saturday September 7 at 4:30pm.

Quakes v Whitecaps

In a game that was marked with league records for shots with 43 and shots on goal for the Quakes and saves from Vancouver Whitecaps goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau with 19, the home team was once again dominant while the visitors continued their season with futility with San Jose winning 3 to 1.

While Vancouver got off to an early lead with a goal from Jacob Nerwinski in the 6th minute, Judson tied the match one minute later.  The Quakes held on to the league thanks to two insurance goals from Chris Wondolowski in the 34th minute and Andy Rios with his second half goal in the 73rd.

The Quakes will continue their homestand against Orlando City on Saturday with a 7:15 kickoff.  The Whitecaps go on to Montreal in an all-Canadian tilt on Wednesday 5pm start before returning home to host NYCFC on Saturday at 7pm.

Quakes v Crew

Quakes draw 1-1 with the Crew.  Magnus Eriksson converted a penalty kick in the 41st minute to give the home team a lead.  However, Gyasi Zardes tied the game with his goal in the 65th minute and the result was each team getting a point and the Quakes’ have 8 wins and 2 draws at 10 home games since April 6.

The Quakes now head back to the road to face the Colorado Rapids in their second meeting in two weeks with the visitors hoping to sweep the series on August 10 6pm start. Columbus will next host interstate rival FC Cincinnati for the first time in MLS for Ohio bragging rights on the same day 4:30 kickoff.

Quakes v Rapids

A Wondo strike that was later credited as an own goal got the Quakes off to a quick lead in the 2nd minute, with Vako extending the lead later in the 34th minute.   Shea Salinas later put the dagger on the game in the 83th minute to give the Quakes another victory.  A goal from Colorado’s Diego Rubio in the closing minutes of the game was the only blemish in a possible clean sheet.

Next on the league schedule for the Quakes will be the Columbus Crew on August 3 at 6:45pm. The Rapids return home to host Montreal on the same day, 6pm start.  The teams will play again the following week on August 10 this time at the Rapids home field.

Quakes v Real Valladolid

Sandro Castillo of Valladolid scored a goal in the 34th minute while Chris Wondolowski evened the score at the 60th minute with an assist from Paul Marie as the Quakes drew with the Spanish La Liga side at 1 goal each.  Wondolowski had a penalty kick goal hit the crossbar in the latter stages of the second half to preserve the tie.
